At the 1971 East African Safari Rally, Ford brought together what they hoped would be a 'dream team' of British driver Roger Clarke and Belgian Gilbert Staepeaere.

The Belgian had won more rallies with the Escort than any other driver and it was hoped that this incredibly fast pairing would win the Rally. Ultimately, the pairing were to struggle home in 24th place with serious gearbox problems.
